African University Day 2015

African higher education internationalization:What does it entails?

Internationalization of African higher education entails a series of international activities and participation such as:

•Academic mobility for student and teachers

•International linkages

•International Partnerships

•Open educational resources (project /research initiatives)

All these and more are to build capacity, enhance access, inform policy, strengthen curriculum, promote cohesion and broaden perspectives in African Universities.

Internationalization is needed in African universities to strengthen the role of these universities in meeting Africa’s development priorities and the Millennium development goals(Goal 8-to develop a global partnership for development)

The roles of Higher education are to :

Create new knowledge, train students and knowledge workers, strategise  on the key ways of improving the well-being of the students and the economic development of societies.

To successfully fulfil these roles, African universities must cooperate with universities in other countries to reform and modernise curricula and pedagogy.

Also,Education must be delivered to other countries using a variety of face-to-face and distance techniques, cross-border education must be promoted and supported.

More attention must be given to regional education hubs, zones, hotspots, education cities and knowledge villages

In like terms,Local culture, Values and needs must be respected in our curricula. International, intercultural and global dimension must be integrated into purpose, functions and delivery of post-secondary education.

Conclusively, internationalization of African higher education in my opinion is an on-going effort and process of transformation that is shaping Africa’s higher education in the 21st century.
